Yes — “things are not always what they seem” is absolutely a recurring theme throughout the Bible. But it's not the only theme — and it’s often paired with "God sees differently than people do", "truth is hidden and then revealed", and "the last shall be first." Reversal of Expectations "The first shall be last, and the last first" (Matt 20:16) The humble are exalted; the proud are brought low. Spiritual Sight vs Physical Sight People are often "blind" to spiritual truth. Jesus heals physical blindness and opens spiritual eyes. Hiddenness & Revelation Parables hide truth from the proud and reveal it to the humble. Jesus often says: "He who has ears, let him hear."
The central message of the Bible is about God redeeming humanity through Jesus Christ — but this redemption is often hidden beneath weakness, suffering, or unlikely people. That’s why this theme fits so well.
Why Does This Matter Spiritually? It teaches humility: we don’t see the full picture. It warns against judging others superficially. It encourages faith: trusting that God's purposes are at work even when we can't see them.
