Rogues Gallery: an irreverent history of corruption in South Africa, from the VOC to the ANC.
Is a beautifully written book by Matthew Blackman and Nick Dall. It is a challenge to the narrative that corruption began in South Africa when a black democratic government of the ANC took over in 1994.
The book also challenges the mainstream narrative that seeks to position Jacob Zuma as the ugly poster boy of corruption. It uses a culmination of both humour and historic materialism to defy the myth that Jacob Zuma is the centre of all corruption in the country.
The book takes the reader through the various epochs of South African history and pinpoints the standout corrupt figures of each era, from colonial South Africa to democratic South Africa and juxtaposes each era with Jacob and Zuma and the Guptas and in the end, the conclusion is left to the reader to decide for themselves.
A wonderfully written book.
