Golferenzo "Borgo dei Gatti", uno dei Borghi più belli d’Italia

#Golferenzo è un comune italiano di 165 abitanti della provincia di Pavia in Lombardia. Si trova sulle colline dell'Oltrepò Pavese, nell'alta val Versa. Il piccolo borgo fa parte dell'associazione de I borghi più belli d'Italia.
In epoca altomedievale il territorio di Golferenzo come (Gulferisi o Gulferixe) fa parte, fin dal periodo longobardo, degli antichi possedimenti dell’abbazia di San Colombano di Bobbio, fondata da San Colombano nel 614.
Golferenzo è un nome di difficile interpretazione. Il Maragliano lo farebbe derivare dai termini celtici, goro, territorio e, frin, monte, e significherebbe paese montano. Sarebbe un isolato celtico con Fortunago. Fino alla fine della seconda guerra mondiale gran parte del territorio comunale rimase di proprietà della famiglia Belcredi, i quali si avvalevano di mezzadri per la lavorazione dei fondi agricoli. Il castello rimase di proprietà della famiglia Varesi, per tre generazioni, fino agli anni novanta.
l nucleo medievale è stato oggetto di un attento recupero sia da parte di privati cittadini sia da parte dell’amministrazione comunale, e a livello urbanistico è da considerare uno dei centri più attraenti dell’Oltrepò Pavese. In piazza della Chiesa si trova l’elegante chiesa parrocchiale di San Nicola da Bari, circondata da un muro di cinta. È di antica fondazione, si pensa romanica (XI-XII. Secolo), ma l’edificio attuale è sorto nel Cinquecento come cappella all’interno del castello, poi ampliato nel secolo successivo con impronta barocca. La facciata è in stile neoclassico con i due affreschi di Santa Rita e San Francesco.
Adiacente alla parrocchiale si trova palazzo Belcredi, nel punto più panoramico del paese. Costruito sulle fondamenta del castello, è in pietra a vista ed è stato edificato con materiali del posto. In adiacenza ai locali rustici adibiti a fienile con sottostante scuderia, il Comune ha creato una struttura polifunzionale utilizzata anche come vetrina dei prodotti tipici del territorio.
Perchè si chiama il Borgo dei Gatti? Una via del borgo, Via Garibaldi, è conosciuta dagli abitanti del luogo come “Via dei Gatt” (via dei gatti, in dialetto locale). Può essere correlato al cognome di una famiglia del luogo, oppure più romanticamente in onore dei tanti felini che ancora vivono liberi fra le strade e le costruzioni in pietra ed i fienili del villaggio.

Golferenzo is an Italian municipality of 165 inhabitants in the province of Pavia in Lombardy. It is located on the hills of Oltrepò Pavese, in the upper Versa valley. The small village is part of the association of the most beautiful villages in Italy.
In the early Middle Ages, the territory of Golferenzo as (Gulferisi or Gulferixe) was part, since the Lombard period, of the ancient possessions of the abbey of San Colombano di Bobbio, founded by San Colombano in 614.
Golferenzo is a name that is difficult to interpret. Maragliano would derive it from the Celtic terms, goro, territory and, frin, mountain, and would mean mountain village. It would be a Celtic block with Fortunago. Until the end of the Second World War, much of the municipal territory remained the property of the Belcredi family, who made use of sharecroppers to work the agricultural land. The castle remained the property of the Varesi family, for three generations, until the nineties.
The medieval core has been the subject of careful restoration by both private citizens and the municipal administration, and on an urban planning level it is considered one of the most attractive centers of the Oltrepò Pavese. In Piazza della Chiesa is the elegant parish church of San Nicola da Bari, surrounded by a boundary wall. It is of ancient foundation, thought to be Romanesque (11th-12th century), but the current building was built in the sixteenth century as a chapel inside the castle, then expanded in the following century with a Baroque imprint. The facade is in neoclassical style with two frescoes of Santa Rita and San Francesco.
Adjacent to the parish church is Palazzo Belcredi, in the most panoramic point of the town. Built on the foundations of the castle, it is in exposed stone and was built with local materials. Adjacent to the rustic rooms used as a barn with stables underneath, the Municipality has created a multipurpose structure also used as a showcase for typical local products.
Why is it called the Borgo dei Gatti? A street in the village, Via Garibaldi, is known by locals as “Via dei Gatt” (street of cats, in the local dialect). It may be related to the surname of a local family, or more romantically in honor of the many felines that still live free among the streets and stone buildings and barns of the village.
