I made this video of Tapping the Furnace, a speaking percussionist solo composed by Dorothy Hindman in 2007.
Tapping the Furnace was composed in memory of the predominantly Black ironworkers at Sloss Furnaces in Birmingham, Alabama. After Sloss Furnaces transitioned away from convict labor in the 1920s, workers of color worked more grueling and dangerous jobs in the furnace for as little as 2 dollars a day. Hindman found source text for the piece in an interview with Clarence Dean, who worked in the furnaces for more than 30 years. You can read more about the piece here: http://dorothyhindman.com/works/solo-...

I recorded all of the audio & video at Meany Hall at the University of Washington, and edited everything in the summer of 2020. You can see all of the things I do at my website, masonlynass.com/epk.html
