STORYLINE:
Myanmar's military chief has pledged to join hands with the new government to establish democracy through the current political transition period.
Senior General Min Aung Hlaing made the comments during a speech at Myanmar's annual Armed Forces Day parade on Sunday.
He said the armed forces – or Tatmadaw as they are called locally – would work to bring about prosperity for the nation.
The military ran the country for over 50 years before stepping back in 2011 and installing a quasi-civilian government.
But a largely free and fair general election last November diminished their power significantly when Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) won a landslide victory.
Even so, the military is still a powerful political force and Min Aung Hlaing's speech was being watched carefully.
It is the first Armed Forces Day parade since the general election and since the recent selection of Suu Kyi loyalist Htin Kyaw as the new president.
The relationship between the Senior General and Suu Kyi is likely to be the key to the next five years in Myanmar.
Despite winning the general election she is barred from the presidency by a clause in the military-authored constitution that was almost certainly aimed specifically at her.
It's a situation she has long been keen to change but her efforts to engage Hlaing on the issue have so far failed.
The new government is due to take power next week.
