The quantity of food waste in first world countries is very cynical when considering the high rate of malnutrition and starvation in developing countries. It is estimated that the world produces 1-2 billion tonnes of food waste annually. Much of this food ends up in a landfill, where it is left to decompose. The decomposition is usually anaerobic and very slow, a process which produces a significant amount of methane. Another issue with associated with food waste diverted to landfills is that the nutrients contained in the food become unavailable for further use. Agricultural soil can become depleted of nutrients rapidly and therefore heavy inputs of fertilizer are required. The production of synthetic fertilizer has tremendous impact on the environment, and is not a sustainable practice.[BREE 518 2015 Group 8 Zoe Martiniak, Laura Kennedy, Alee-Elo Tee-Bor]
