On December 22, 2024—the winter solstice and the shortest day of the year—I made the dark, sunless journey from Prudhoe Bay to Fairbanks via the infamous Dalton Highway. This stretch over Atigun Pass, the highest and most dangerous road pass in Alaska, tested every nerve.
