First Time in Belize! 🇧🇿 (Belize Surprised Us)

Our first time in Belize started in San Ignacio, the perfect base to explore the heart of the Cayo District. This lively town is known for its vibrant markets, incredible local food, and easy access to some of the most fascinating Mayan ruins in the country. From wandering through the San Ignacio Market to tasting traditional Belizean dishes, every moment gave us a deeper connection to the culture and people of Belize.

One of the highlights of our trip was visiting Xunantunich, one of the most impressive Maya archaeological sites in Belize. After a short hand-cranked ferry ride across the Mopan River, we climbed to the top of El Castillo, the main temple, for breathtaking views of the jungle and even into neighboring Guatemala. Exploring the ruins was like stepping back in time, surrounded by history, mystery, and stunning ancient architecture.

Back in town, San Ignacio’s food scene was an adventure on its own. From delicious street food at the market to cozy local restaurants serving Belizean staples like rice and beans, stew chicken, and fry jacks, every meal felt authentic and full of flavor. The market itself was buzzing with fresh produce, spices, and handmade goods, offering an incredible glimpse into daily life.

San Ignacio is more than just a stopover—it’s a destination full of charm, culture, and adventure. Whether you’re here to dive into history at Xunantunich, sample traditional food, or simply wander through the lively streets, this town offers an authentic taste of Belize.
