In this video, we highlight the key points and takeaways from the UN Water Conference held in March 2023
Water is fundamental for sustaining life.
Water is essential for human health and well-being, for food and energy production, as well as for healthy ecosystems, climate adaptation and poverty reduction.
However, decades of unsustainable human activities on land, along aquatic systems and at sea are imposing a heavy burden on water-related ecosystems and undermining the ability of ecosystems to combat both the causes and the impacts of climate change.
This in turn impedes the realization of the human right to safe drinking water and sanitation and a healthy environment.
If we understand the complex relationships between different ecosystems, we can take a pragmatic and adaptive source-to-sea approach to address the linkages across the source-to-sea continuum. Understanding the linkages between systems such as water and health, water, climate and the environment, water, food and energy as well as water, peace and security is key to reconciling often-competing sectoral objectives and forging coalitions and partnerships for collective commitments.
