After the administration of neuromuscular blocking agents, the neuromuscular function of the patient must be monitored. In conscious patients, it is possible to assess muscle strength on the basis of clinical criteria, but these assessments are subjective and are not reliably predictive of full recovery. Typically, nerve stimulation and the concomitant monitoring of muscle contractions or twitches are used to assess the level of neuromuscular block. This video focuses on the methods used in most clinical practices to assess neuromuscular function after the administration of neuromuscular blocking agents. Because these agents can be lethal, clinicians should be familiar with the use of nerve stimulators and monitors in the assessment of neuromuscular function.1
