There are so many things you can do before you just jump on! Ground-driving is one of those things.

This is a huge confidence builder as the horse has to take steps without anyone in front of him to lead him; just as he does when you get on.
.
If you start in a side-pull, you'll have an even softer horse, as the pull is coming from their nose, rather than a bit in their mouth. Eventually, you can move the driving reins to the snaffle.

As you and your horse get better in a small area, you can move out to bigger areas, until finally you're driving them anywhere you would ride them.
