On this drive we follow Illinois 203 through US Steel's Granite City Works. The beginning on the drive we pass the two blast furnaces on our left and the coke ovens on our right. We then head Northwest on 20th street past the bloom yard and steel making, then rolling operations.
It was announced earlier this month that this location would be shutting down and then later announced that US Steel would be purchased by Nippon Steel, a Japanese producer.
This drive is a vast departure from my typical content but is nonetheless dear to my heart. My family and I are from this area and I work in the steel industry. I have many friends that work or have worked at this facility.
Granite City Steel has been a fixture in this region for well over a century. The rest of the town as well as numerous supporting businesses depend on Granite City Steel and it's success. The future of these hard working individuals depends now on the decisions of the Nippon executive team.
The remainder of this video follows Niedringhaus Ave, through downtown and past another fixture of the steel industry, Amsted Rail, aka American Steel Foundry. I know first hand the skilled and dedicated men and women of this facility as well and pray for their continued success in the wake of Granite City Steel closure.
