00- INTRO* Today let’s explore Tacoma’s Thea Foss Waterway and walk all the way down the end of the boardwalk. So join me only on the Epic Travel Adventures.
36 – The fountain you see here is part of the Glass Museum. Right now it is off. This area is known as the Thea Foss Waterway and it is located in Tacoma, WA. The Waterway is an inlet that separates the downtown area from the Port of Tacoma. By the way, the 90-foot silver dome in the back replicates area’s forest industry’s wood burner. It is known as the Landing or the Hot-Shop and is part of the Glass Museum.
16 – Did you know that Thea Foss Waterway used to be an industrial center hotspot over 101 years ago? Industries dumped waste, chemicals, & even sewage went right into the bay. By 1981 it was abandoned and all contaminated with industrial waste. In 2006, the cleanup of the Waterways began and to this day the area is being properly maintained helping the development of new museums, parks, restaurants, and residential areas. Today, the area is as beautiful as it gets.
33 – As we explore the area, notice different and unique industrial pieces of art placed within the boardwalk or the Esplanade. This is part of the Waterway’s history.
33 – The art project on this tiny beach is the Floating Life Forms project that represents native sea creatures found in the Puget Sound. These spherical pieces of art, put in 2015 symbolize a balance between the ocean world and the human world. There are 6 of these hollow bronze spheres weighing between 120 to 500 lbs.
14 – These are the Flag Semaphores installed in 2020 on the Foss Waterway boardwalk inspired by the maritime flag systems. Flag Semaphores used at sea convey encoded information by visually signaling hand-held flags. Position of the flags determine the letters. These semaphores spell out “Thea Foss.”
44 – This is the Dock Street Marina North Pier. It is a 320-foot dock and docks about 20 boats.
56 – Coming up to the beautiful Foss Waterway Tacoma Harbor you see the historic Murray Morgan Bridge in the background. This 1911 bridge is a vertical-lift bridge connecting the tideflats to the downtown Tacoma. Opened in 1913 the bridge was originally known as the 11th Street Bridge. Today you can drive, bike and even walk on the bridge.
44 – Across the Interstate-705 next to the Union Station is the State History Museum which opened in 1996. The museum features the largest permanent model train layout. You can also find several interactive exhibits, explore the history of Washington State, and find out more about the industrialization. It is a beautiful building right across the University of Washington’s Tacoma Campus.
07 – PREVIEW* Next, let’s head to a rapidly growing city of Ruston just north of Tacoma. Let’s find out how this city is booming ONLY on the Epic Travel Adventures.
