A quick comparison between an unfiltered image and a ntsc filtered / simulated composite cable output on the Sega Genesis.
You can clearly see a massive difference in quality.
At the time games were made specifically with composite video output in mind. That's why there is so much dithering in the image.
Modern emulators and upscalers for retro consoles tend to put out the raw pixel perfect image rather than accurately represent how a Genesis game should really look like.
This was recorded using an emulator with ntsc filter turned off and on.
