Sven Nyholm: Personalized Imitation Games: Permissibility, Desirability, and the Ethics of Digital Duplicates
Recently, it has become possible to fine-tune large language models in such a way that their outputs sound like the writings of particular people. For example, with the late philosopher Daniel Dennett's consent and participation, three researchers were able to create an AI chatbot whose outputs sounded indistinguishable from what Dennett might say.
The lecture discusses the ethics of creating AI technologies that imitate particular people. It considers both whether it is permissible and whether it is desirable to create such digital duplicates of real people.
Sven Nyholm is a Professor of the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. He is the author of This is Technology Ethics: An Introduction and Humans and Robots: Ethics, Agency, and Anthropomorphism.
