Today I have a special focus on a popular houseplant that often gets misunderstood and alas.. Mistreated, the humble yet elegant.. Peace Lily.
I’m here to help you stop killing your Peace Lily houseplant! I know many of you have struggled to keep them looking nice long term, often reporting wilting leaves, yellowing leaf tips, and lack of flowers but fear not.. with just a few specific but very simple tweaks to your peace lily care routine you will be able to keep your houseplant happy and healthy for many months to come.

First things first, let's talk about watering, probably the most common mistake people make with Peace Lily, if you listen to the common generic care advice, you will often be told to water sparingly, letting it dry out between waterings.. This is not good advice; this is what I would call bad advice, in fact, the opposite is what you need to do. Regular watering is essential, and the soil must be kept slightly moist, avoiding dryness. In fact, you could even keep the whole plant immersed in water, and it would be perfectly happy, making it difficult to overwater. I would suggest you avoid using terracotta pots, they look great but they are porous and will suck the moisture out of the soil it’s easy for it to dry out in the sunny warmer weather. If you really want to a terracotta pot you can use a plastic inner pot and have the terracotta pot as the outer pot so the soil isn’t in contact with the terracotta.


Sunlight: The leaves on your Peace Lily are very delicate and will burn easily in direct sunlight, so don’t keep them on a sunny windowsill sill they will burn up in no time, but if you want repeat flowers it will need a good amount of sunlight but indirect, so a bright room without getting the sun directly on the leaves is perfect.


How to get your peace Lily to reflower: It’s not unusual for peace lilies to not re flower after the initial flowering at the nurseries to encourage this it will need plenty of bright indirect light, good regular water and 20c or 70f consistent temperatures.

Propagation is by division, so if your houseplant is growing out of the spot that you want to keep it in or the pot you like then you will need to break the roots apart making sure that each part has a good amount of roots, then you can plant the second part into a new pot.
Feeding is monthly in the growing season but personally I like to use slow release granules because I have quite a few houseplants and it’s a lot less work to put these granules onto the surface once a year and I can then forget about it knowing that the peace lily will be getting everything it needs.
