Special Election Nears; IHS Doctors Censored | Full Episode

This week on New Mexico in Focus, we look ahead to next week's mayoral runoff election in Albuquerque. Host Nash Jones breaks down some of the key policy differences between Mayor Tim Keller and his opponent, former law enforcement official turned weed magnate, Darren White.

Last month, reporter Mary Hudetz published a story with nonprofit newsroom ProPublica that unearthed a new system of censorship within the federal Indian Health Service. Hudetz spoke to doctors and other public health experts to try and figure out why the department has essentially gone dark over the past year when it comes to messaging about vaccines. Executive Producer Jeff Proctor sat down with Hudetz to talk about what she found and consider how these new actions might impact Native communities.

Jeff Lopez, the new head of the state Office of Broadband Access and Expansion, updates Nash Jones on the agency’s latest work to expand internet access to more schools and homes.
