Old Marta Heller had lived her whole life in Dunkelwald Hamlet, a clutch of farmsteads clinging to the edge of the Aver Hills. She’d seen beastmen raids, goblin fires in the woods, even black clouds of carrion crows before the Plague Year.
But she’d never heard that sound before.

It came at dusk — low and distant, like thunder trapped beneath the ground. The animals went mad first. Cows broke their fences. Dogs howled and tore free of their chains. The children cried, swearing they could feel the ground breathing.

The priest said it was an earthquake. The soldiers passing through said it was thunder.
Marta only listened, eyes wide. “No,” she whispered, “that’s the sound of feet.”

The next morning, travelers from the east arrived — or what was left of them. Burnt wagons, shattered wheels, hollow-eyed survivors mumbling of giants. They spoke of a host of monsters — bellies like cauldrons, mouths full of men’s bones, and banners painted with blood.

That night, Dunkelwald’s watchtower went silent.

At dawn, the villagers saw smoke rising from the hills, thick and black. The sound came again — louder now, closer, and joined by laughter that rolled like an avalanche.

Old Marta dropped her bucket, staring eastward as the first trees toppled in the distance.

“They’re coming,” she said.
And the wind carried the smell of cooking meat.
