There's not much that's more important than your reel when you're trolling. A mechanically sound reel that's performing as intended is mission critical, especially if you're dealing with big, powerful fish. The reel has basically two functions: it lets out line and it picks up line. That's about it. But if either one of those functions isn't working properly, your day is over. It's important to maintain your reels every season for peak performance. I have a lot of reels that are over 20 years old and still work like brand new. In this video, we'll disassemble, clean, repair, oil, grease, reassemble and test an Okuma Coldwater 453DS linecounter reel dropped off to us for service. Doing it yourself is pretty fast and easy though if you're so inclined. While this video is specifically about the Okuma CW 453DS reel, the general idea covers almost every reel. You can apply the techniques in this video to any fishing reel.
