The Nannerl Notenbuch is a book in which Leopold Mozart, from 1759 to about 1764, wrote pieces for his daughter, Maria Anna Mozart (known as "Nannerl"), to learn and play. His son Wolfgang also used the book, which recorded his first compositions (some written by his father). The book contains simple, short keyboard pieces (typically for harpsichord), suitable for beginners; there are many anonymous minuets, some works by Leopold, and some works by other composers, including Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and the Austrian composer G. C. Wagenseil. There are also some technical exercises, an interval table, and some modulating figured basses.
Our transcription is based on the longest piece (about twice as long as the other entries in the Notenbuch); it is the first piece in the Notenbuch to be dedicated by the young Wolfgang. The date of this work indicates that it was composed in Salzburg, during 1764.
