Contemporary composer Hyo-Won Woo seeks to blend her native Korean musical elements and Western techniques in her compositions. Her setting of “Cum Sancto Spiritu” demonstrates Western concepts such as development, imitation, and counterpoint combined with the traditional Korean sounds of the pentatonic scale and the long-short rhythmic patterns. The basses begin singing a pentatonic ostinato to carry the piece into a lively and text-rich homophonic, joyful section. Afterward, the piece climaxes with a panicked, fervent call and response Amen section reminiscent of Western counterpoint.
Gloria in excelsis Deo et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis.
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will.
Laudamus te, benedícimus te, adoramus te, glorificamus te, gratias agimus tibi propter magnam gloriam tuam,
We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory,
Quoniam tu solus Sanctus, tu solus Dominus, tu solus Altissimus, Jesu Christe, Amen.
For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, Amen.
(from the traditional Latin Mass)
