In a striking demonstration of Ukraine's advancing drone warfare capabilities, the country's Security Service, SBU, carried out a high-impact operation that is said to have destroyed or damaged over 40 Russian military aircraft in a single night, according to Ukrainian security sources cited by the Kyiv Post. Dubbed “Web,” the covert mission targeted four key Russian airbases, Belaya, Diaghilevo, Olenya, and Ivanovo, damaging strategic bombers such as the Tu-95s, Tu-22M3s, and even an A-50 early warning aircraft. "This is a game-changer," an SBU source commented. "Our drones have now reached deep into enemy territory, striking the very bases from which planes that bomb our civilians take off. Their reign of impunity is over." Footage obtained by the Kyiv Post shows raging fires and multiple explosions across the airfields, including one clip from Belaya airbase where a voice, believed to be SBU Chief Lieutenant General Vasyl Maliuk, celebrates the successful strike, calling it “bavovna”, a slang term for explosions on Russian-occupied land. The operation, which is said to have been in the works for months and personally overseen by Maliuk, caused over $2.2 billion in damages to Russia’s strategic aviation, based on preliminary Ukrainian estimates. While the Russian Defense Ministry has yet to comment, Ukrainian sources suggest the full extent of the destruction may still be revealed as assessments continue. This operation represents one of Ukraine’s most ambitious drone strikes to date, marking a significant shift in the SBU's capabilities from intelligence gathering to offensive action. It also serves as a stark message to Moscow: Ukrainian reach now extends deep into Russia’s military core.
