FMX 2024: MotionPunk - Art Directing Photorealism with Octane Render

In his presentation "MotionPunk - Art Directing Photorealism with Octane Render," Thanos Kagkalos will share his journey from a 3D generalist to an art director, today working for Apple, and his experience working solo from anywhere.

He'll dive into the advantages of leveraging Cinema 4D and Octane Render in his daily production workflow, highlighting tips and tricks for efficient live viewing, realistic lighting and textures, caustics, and network rendering. Thanos will also showcase some exciting new features in Octane that have enhanced his ability to create stunning, photorealistic visuals.

Thanos Kagkalos, also known as MotionPunk, is a motion design director based in Athens, Greece.

Thanos stands out not just for his technical skills but also for his unique, playful style. His whimsical approach has attracted attention from global brands such as Apple, Netflix, Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Paramount, Logitech, EA Sports, National Geographic, and Euroleague, among many others.

His portfolio spans commercial projects and cinematic title sequences, showcasing his versatility and commitment to storytelling. In the last few years, he has freelanced as an art director for selected VFX and design studios like The Mill, ManVsMachine, Framestore, MPC, and Elastic. Currently, he is part of the motion design/art direction department at Apple.
Embracing remote work, Thanos has adapted to solo projects, leveraging Cinema 4D and Octane Render to meet daily production challenges. His innovative approach not only pushes the boundaries of 3D design but also paves the way for new methods of visual storytelling. Driven by curiosity, he is always on the lookout for new visual languages.
