Our brains are divided into two hemispheres: the left is all about logic and analysis, and helps us get high SAT scores; the right, is all about design and emotion, and helps us… “get” art.
Over the past century, we have been focusing much more on left- than right-brain thinking, as we had to make sense of an explosion of information, convert it into knowledge, and put that knowledge to work. Engineers, computer programmers, and other knowledge workers led the evolution.
But success led to abundance and automation, making it less important how products are made, and more important how they are sold. Right-brainers can give meaning to products through design, empathy, and story-telling.
Right-brain thinking took the back seat during the Information Age. But in the Conceptual Age, right-brain thinking will become increasingly important. Those that understand what Pink calls the six aptitudes of this type of thinking – and harness their power – are going to thrive in the emerging world.
The right brain will be at least as important as the left brain, giving rise to a whole new mind.
