During WWII's Pacific campaign, American P-61 Black Widow night fighters equipped with SCR-720 radar systematically dominated Japanese aircraft in nocturnal combat. While Japanese pilots relied on visual searching with primitive radar lagging five years behind, American crews tracked targets from up to seven miles away through complete darkness. The cavity magnetron-based SCR-720, developed through British-American collaboration, offered precision and reliability Japanese technology couldn't match due to industrial limitations and inter-service rivalry. By spring 1945, Japanese night operations became suicidal as P-61s destroyed aircraft whose crews never detected the attacks. This technological asymmetry exemplified how scientific superiority, not just courage, determined modern warfare outcomes.
