In 1982, when the Minnesota Vikings lost to the New York Jets in week 8 (week 16) of the NFL season, the Vikings wound up clinching a playoff spot without anyone realizing it. The league, the players, the team, the coaches... no one knew until a few hours after the game, when the league calculated the scenarios and realized that the Vikings were in, even though they weren't in when the game ended, and nothing around the league happened in between those two time periods.
