A playthrough of an unreleased prototype of Tiertex's 1991 developed edutainment title for the Sega Master System, Sonic's Edusoft.
Though U.S. Gold was slated to be publisher for this title, it was never released. I can't tell if it's finished or not - with Tiertex at the helm, who ever knows what to expect?
Sonic's Edusoft (this is a name that you'd typically see on a Japanese-language game with its abbreviating of both 'educational' and 'software' in such a strange way) was meant for kids to help them with basic arithmetic and spelling. There are several levels throughout the game, and each time you win at one you receive a new emerald. Once 27 have been collected, you win the game.
The overworld has a few obstacles requiring that you get enough emeralds to open gates for access to new areas, as well as a couple of mini-games meant to provide a fun distraction. The game overall is kind of neat in a quaint, rough, "thank God we've moved on from that!" kind of way. It's certainly unpolished, but in truth, far far worse games have been inflicted on children in the name of education. It also looks surprisingly good for a SMS game with its use of sprites from the original Genesis title.
It's a cool curiosity that, not unlike Sonic's Schoolhouse or his Pico game, have never gotten anywhere near the attention that the mainline series games have.
