D&D Lore: The Shadar-Kai

This volume is part three of a four part "Shadow Series" covering all facets of the Raven Queen along with her most closely associated lore.

Born of shadows, consumed by darkness, summoned by godly forces and ultimately ravaged by time and conflict. The Shadar-kai are a race of people that have undergone numerous transformative retcons across editions, each iteration pulling them in a different direction and setting them off on erratic trajectories.

Today's lore discovery aims to navigate what amounts to four distinct versions of the Shadar-kai across their three major retcons since being introduced in the third edition.

In our discoveries, we will look at their revolving door of change, from the dramatic and the incompatible… as well as identifying those elements of the Shadar-kai that have remained relatively consistent.

Despite some irreconcilable differences, I am going to make my best case for considering the Shadar-Kai as a people to occupy your worlds.

And at the end of this exploration, I believe many of you will agree - as I do - that the Shadar-Kai offer a compelling legacy and a surprising amount of depth that has long been overshadowed by their inconsistent presentation and some ever-changing storytelling.
