Darken watercolor without changing the color using Neutral Tint—for clean, rich shadows (no mud).
In this beginner-friendly demo I use Daniel Smith Neutral Tint (cool, inky vibe) and compare the look to a warmer tint. We’ll do quick swatches with yellow, magenta, blue, burnt sienna, and sap green, then place darker values so flowers and landscapes pop.
You’ll learn
When to choose Neutral Tint instead of complementary mixes
Simple light / medium / deep ratios that stay transparent
Smart places to add darker values for shape and contrast
Materials
Watercolor paper; round brush; water & paper towel; Neutral Tint (Daniel Smith or Schmincke); Hansa Yellow Light, Magenta, French Ultramarine, Burnt Sienna, Sap Green.
