In this video I install the crankshaft seal (rear main seal). Unfortunately I failed and I felt it was necessary to share my failure with the world. Failures are the best way to learn. I suggest you watch this video so that you can learn from my mistakes. Watching this video could save you a lot of money.
This video is not a complete failure for many reasons. The procedures used will work just fine. I simply made a mistake that anyone could make. Watch this video so you can learn from my mistakes. This video is relevant to all #M116, #M117 Mercedes-Benz 8 cylinder gas, 3.8L, 4.2L, 5.0L, 5.6L engines. It is also relevant to the M119.
I am documenting every part of this vehicle as I put it back together (including failures). The idea is to end up with the best documented 560SL rebuilds on the Internet.
Links to the manual and links to all tools used in this video are below.
I want everyone who visits my channel to know about a friend of mine named Tasos. His videos inspire me to be more like him. He is so much better than I am. You can find his YouTube channel at:

In this video I used the special Mercedes-Benz rear seal installation tool [117 589 00 43 00] I purchased several years ago. I purchased this directly through Mercedes-Benz and it is still available. You may be able to find one cheaper on eBay.
To make sure the spring on the back of the rear seal stays put during the install, I used Driven Racing Oil Engine Assembly Grease in a 1oz Tube. I used only a pea size amount:
