DeepSeek, a relatively unknown AI research lab from China, has caused significant concern within Silicon Valley after unveiling AI models that reportedly outperform some of the leading American systems. In December, the lab introduced a free, open-source large language model, claiming it took only two months and less than $6 million to develop. Independent benchmark tests have shown that DeepSeek’s model surpassed the performance of Meta’s Llama 3.1, OpenAI’s GPT-4, and Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet 3.5 across a variety of tasks, including complex problem-solving, mathematics, and coding.
