Understanding Patent Claims Part 1; Independent and dependent claims, infringement and validity

There are two basic type of patent claims; independent and dependent. A patent claim has three parts, a preamble, transitional phrase and limitations. The limitations are used to determine whether a product infringes the claims of the patent. Dependent claims can save validity of your patent if the independent claim is later found to be invalid. This video provides an example apparatus claim; an independent apparatus claim, and a dependent apparatus claim. The video discusses how the dependent claim can save the patent from a validity attack.
