I attended the Petaling Jaya Mid-Autumn Festival celebration organised by the Petaling Jaya Parliamentary Office (YB Maria Chin) and Bukit Gasing Assemblyman (YB Rajiv Rishyakaran). Although I was late for the event, there were many food stalls opened, and the hot air balloon ride was still going on.
After two years of the pandemic, the PJ folks finally get to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival. It is celebrated yearly with gatherings, performances, lion dance, lanterns and mooncakes.
The Mid-Autumn Festival is a traditional Chinese ceremony celebrated by the Chinese people worldwide. It falls on the 15th day of the eight month on the lunar calendar, and this is when the moon is at its fullest and brightest. The festival's origins are at least 3,000 years old and are tied to the worship of the moon Goddess, Chang'e.
One of the main features of the festival is mooncakes. It is said that rebels passed notes within them to organise an uprising that led to the establishment of the Ming Dynasty in China back in the 14th century.
Traditionally, the mooncake filling was made of red bean paste, lotus seed paste, or salted duck egg yolk. Today more exotic flavours are available such as pandan, durian, mocha, tiramisu and others.
Children will be parading around with colourful paper lanterns in the shape of animals and cartoon characters. This has become a popular local name for the Lantern Festival celebration.
