Introduced in 1977, the 320i Group 5 was the first 3 Series developed for racing. Needing a competition vehicle quickly after the discontinuation of the 3.0 CSL race car, BMW Motorsport transformed the roadgoing 3 Series in just 12 weeks by fitting a BMW Formula 2 racing engine, racing suspension, aluminum roll cage, and an aerodynamic fiberglass body shaped in the Pininfarina Wind Tunnel. Painted in Gösser Beer livery, this example scored the most points for BMW Motorsport during the 1978 World Championship for Makes and helped secure the Manufacturers’ Championship for BMW.
