On the 9th day of the sacred Karthika Puranam, Sri Santosh Kumar Ghanapathi narrates the divine and deeply touching story of Ajamila, a tale from the Bhagavata Purana and Skanda Purana that reveals the infinite mercy of Lord Vishnu and the power of chanting His holy name.

Ajamila was once a noble Brahmin who lived a virtuous life of devotion and truth. But due to bad company and attachment, he gradually fell into sin and forgot his spiritual path. In his later years, he lived a degraded life, bound by desires and worldly attachments.

However, at the time of his death, when he saw the fearsome messengers of Yama (the god of death), he cried out the name of his youngest son — “Narayana!” Little did he realize that by uttering the divine name of Lord Vishnu, even unknowingly, he was invoking the Lord Himself.

Instantly, the Vishnudutas (messengers of Lord Vishnu) appeared, stopping the Yamadutas from taking Ajamila’s soul. They declared that the holy name “Narayana” had purified him completely, washing away all his sins. Realizing the Lord’s infinite compassion, Ajamila renounced worldly life, moved to the holy city of Haridwar, and spent his remaining years in meditation and devotion, ultimately attaining Moksha — liberation.
