In tribute to the late, great Brian Wilson, here’s my solo arrangement of Surf’s Up, a song he wrote with lyricist Van Dyke Parks for the aborted Smile album. It was first heard as a solo demo on a 1967 Leonard Bernstein documentary called Inside Pop, and then eventually turned up on a 1971 Beach Boys album of the same name, before finally being recreated by Brian Wilson and the Wondermints on their 2004 recreation of the shelved Smile album (a CD version of which sits on the music stand). The song is in several parts — the first moving between Dm and G and moving around the houses before resolving in D major, then moving into Aflat and B flat, before going around the houses and eventually resolving in F minor. This is the only arrangement online that plays the melody as well as the chords — I’ve tried to mix the piano parts, the vocals, the bass lines and some of the orchestral flourishes.
