Ik Baba Akal Roop Dooja Rababi Mardana
Source: Vaar 1 (Ballad 1), Pauri 35 of Bhai Gurdas Ji.
Theme: Historical narrative, praise of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, and the Guru-Sikh relationship.
This Pauri (stanza) is a famous historical account of Guru Nanak Dev Ji's visit to Baghdad during his Udasis (travels).
The Central Line: "Ik Baba Akal Roop Dooja Rababi Mardana" translates to, "Firstly, Baba (Guru Nanak Dev Ji) is the embodiment of the Timeless One (Akaal Roop), secondly, with him was his companion, Mardana, the Rebeck (Rabab) player." This line elevates Guru Nanak Dev Ji to the status of a spiritual master who is one with God, traveling with his devoted musical companion.
The Narrative: The Pauri describes how Guru Nanak Dev Ji arrived in Baghdad and stayed outside the city [1.3]. He gave a call for prayer (Bang), causing the entire world to fall into a state of silent wonder (Sunn Samaana). The Pir (religious elder) of the city, Dastegir, was astonished to see such an intoxicated and powerful Faqir (holy person) [1.3].
The Identity: When questioned about his identity, Bhai Mardana Ji replies that the Guru is Nanak, who has come into the dark age (Kaliyug) and recognizes God and His devotees as one. The composition concludes by affirming that Guru Nanak Dev Ji is known across all directions, the earth, and the sky [1.3].
