“La Cumparsita” is the title of the famous tango written in 1916 by the Uruguayan musician Gerardo Matos Rodríguez who was 19 at the time. He was the son of the owner of a popular cabaret in Montevideo. Gerardo studied architecture, but he was more passionate about music. He played piano and began composing tangos while still a teenager.
La Cumparsita was originally just an instrumental tango (1916). The famous lyrics were only added a few years later, by the Argentine lyricist Pascual Contursi (with later versions by others).
The words completely changed the feeling of the piece — from a lively parade (cumparsita) to a deeply melancholy love song.
