Nestled in the village of Manthal near Skardu, this awe-inspiring granite carving from the 8th century CE is one of Pakistan’s rarest historical landmarks. At its heart stands a grand image of the Buddha, flanked by two Maitreya (future Buddhas) and surrounded by nearly twenty Bodhisattvas — a reflection of the region’s Golden Era of Buddhism between the 8th and 10th centuries, deeply influenced by the Gandhara culture.
Rising nearly 30 feet high and 20 feet wide, this majestic rock has silently witnessed the passage of centuries. It first gained international recognition in 1906 when Scottish traveler Ella Christie documented it, and since then, efforts have been made to preserve its legacy. Even after the arrival of Islam in the 14th century with Ali Hamadani, the Manthal Buddha Rock endured — standing as a bridge between eras, faiths, and cultures.
Today, it is more than a monument. It is a living testament to history, art, and spirituality, drawing travelers, historians, and seekers from around the world to marvel at its beauty.
