Founded as a city of Nevada in 1905, Sparks was named after John Sparks, who was a Nevada Governor from 1903 to 1908, and is a member of the Silver Party. Sparks became a tourist destination when it would host the Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-off that was held every September and is sponsored by the Nugget Casino Resort, the only major casino resort in Sparks.
