What I Filmed:
In this video, I capture the raw power of nature during the severe weather outbreak on April 17, 2025. Starting in North Omaha, Nebraska, I filmed the entire lifecycle of the devastating EF-3 tornado that tore through the area, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. This tornado, with peak winds of 140 mph, traveled 8.3 miles and caused significant damage to homes and buildings, including destroying at least 4 homes and injuring a volunteer firefighter. As I chased the storm, I encountered massive hail up to 4 inches in diameter, which remarkably did not break my vehicle’s windows. Continuing my chase, I headed south to Essex, Iowa, where I captured footage of the impressive EF-1 tornado near Essex, all while listening to live severe weather coverage on the radio. This video provides a front-row seat to the intensity of these storms and the incredible forces of nature at play.
Overall Severe Weather Event Description:
On April 17, 2025, a significant severe weather system swept through eastern Nebraska and southwest Iowa, producing two powerful supercells. These storms generated widespread severe weather, including hail up to 4 inches in diameter, wind gusts exceeding 80 mph, and at least 15 tornadoes. In Nebraska, the most notable tornado was an EF-3 that caused extensive damage north of Omaha, destroying several homes and injuring one person. In Iowa, tornadoes were reported near Essex and other areas, with one tornado near Essex rated as EF-1. The storms impacted communities such as Bennington, Manley (Nebraska), and Randolph, Essex (Iowa), leaving a trail of destruction across the region.
