In this Physics video in Hindi for Class 12 we explained why electric discharge from a high voltage object happens from its pointy region. This is the effect of high electric field generated at the surface of a pointy (sharp edge) region, despite the whole surface is at the same potential.
Electric field at a charged surface is proportional to the surface charge density there. And the surface charge density is inversely proportional to the radius of curvature of the region. Hence the less is the radius of curvature of region at a surface, the more is the intensity of electric field.
