The Highest Mountains in world

As one of the world's highest mountain ranges, besides offering natural beauty, this mountain range also poses a threat to climbers who attempt to conquer it. Here are the world's highest mountains you should know about.
1. Gunung Everest – 8,848 m
Everest is the world's highest mountain, standing at 8,848 meters above sea level. Located in the Himalayas on the China-Nepal border, Everest was first climbed by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay in 1953.

While not the most difficult mountain to climb at over 8,000 meters, at nearly 9,000 meters, the oxygen supply is scarce, the temperatures are extremely low, and the winds are dangerous and can be deadly. In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Nepal and China banned foreign climbing groups during the climbing season, marking the third year in a decade without a summit attempt from the Nepalese (Southern) side.

2. Godwin Austen (K2) – 8,611 m
K2, located along the Pakistan-China border, stands at 28,251 feet above sea level, making it the second-highest mountain in the world after Everest. While not as high as Everest, climbers generally consider K2 more difficult due to the limited support provided by ropes and fixed routes, more unpredictable weather, and steeper climbs.

Consequently, only 367 people had successfully climbed K2 until 2018 (compared to 4,000 on Everest). In 2021, a team of 10 Nepalese climbers reached the summit in winter, becoming the first group to do so during the most dangerous season.


3. Kangchenjunga – 8,586 m
As the highest peak in India and the third-highest mountain in the world at 28,169 feet, Kanchenjunga only sees about 20-25 climbers annually, although a record 34 were reached in 2019. This part of the Himalayas also extends into eastern Nepal, and the region is home to approximately 2,000 species of flowering plants, 252 species of birds, and some of the country's most endangered mammals, such as the snow leopard and red panda.

Nepal protects Kanchenjunga through the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Project, which provides sustainable community development for the district's population of 122,072, wildlife monitoring, and natural resource management.


4. Lhotse – 8,516 m
Lhotse lies on the border of Nepal and Tibet, separated from Everest by only about 2 miles, although only 575 climbers reached the 27,940-foot summit between 1955 and 2019. In 2011, an American guide named Michael Horst became the first to summit both Everest and Lhotse within 24 hours.

While the Everest route has become increasingly congested, the Lhotse route has become increasingly popular because it is less crowded, more economical, and follows the same route as Everest for the initial section. A number of accidents, avalanches, and earthquakes prevented climbers from reaching the Lhotse summit in 2014, 2015, and 2016.


5. Makalu – 8,485 m
Not far from Mount Everest, lies the pyramid-shaped mountain Makalu, 27,838 feet high on the Himalayan border between Nepal and Tibet. Its remote, four-sided peak makes Makalu one of the most difficult mountains in the world to climb, due to its sharp edges and exposed position. As a result, only five of the first 16 ascent attempts were successful, and even today, only 206 people have reached the summit.

In 2018, Swedish explorer Carina Ahlqvist led a climb to raise awareness about climate change, supporting the European Space Agency's Climate Change Initiative. A team of scientists collected measurements to study rock and soil avalanches, and surveyed glaciers at the base of the mountain to examine the region's climate history.
