The Pillars of the Earth — How to Play 🎲 and Is It a Gem? 💎

The Pillars of the Earth, based on the novel by Ken Follett, was designed by Michael Rieneck and Stefan Stadler and published by Kosmos in 2006. Gather resources and use your craftsmen to help build the central cathedral. This ho-hum so-common game description hides a unique take on worker placement, with a random worker order and a decreasing cost to place. My worker came out early, but it's really expensive. Should I bite the bullet and pay top dollar to get that sweet spot? Or pass, so later I can place for free... but maybe by that time there aren't any good spots left.

The Pillars of the Earth came out after Caylus and before Agricola, when worker-placement was new and exciting but wasn't yet a defined genre. In this window, there were a number of creative variations on what would later become a pretty common and standard game mechanism. The Pillars of the Earth remains a great, unique game, with only its length and samey-ness as downsides.

You'll notice the naming change from "Why It's a Gem" to "Is It a Gem?" Just setting the stage. I've gotten a lot of requests of games to cover, and I want to be able to record videos on them, even if I personally don't think they're gems.

This was to be my first video recorded in 4K but I'm still playing around with my new equipment. Please forgive my experiments in this video and probably the next couple.
