Gold Rush Merchant Shipwreck, Alaska. Hidden in Plain Sight.

My introduction to Skagway came when I worked onboard Princess Cruises, and I was surprised to learn that some of the most interesting history is not often talked about. With the ship, there is a variety of tours available, from whale watching to the White Pass Express, and by the time you leave you should be well educated on the boom and bust the gold rush brought to this area of North America. Of course, it is impossible to learn everything in one day, especially when it comes to a place that has seen so much activity over the past 150 years. One of my favourites, is the wreckage of the Bark Canada. You can see the remains of this famous ship at low tide on route to Dyea, which is another fascinating and lesser know part of Skagway history. Both of these locations are accessible after a short drive from Skagway, which I suppose is why they are not available to ship passengers, but if you are visiting with a vehicle, it is well worth the drive. Imagine what could be found in either location if you had a good metal detector.

Skagway is always a pleasure to visit, but this season we wanted to see something new to both of us, so we set our compass in the direction of Haines. Haines is only a short ferry ride away, and that was our original plan, but after seeing the price of the ferry, we opted to drive around. The drive added an extra couple of days to the route, but I couldn't possibly complain, because the route is amazing. I have always loved the drive down into Skagway, but the drive into Haines might even be better. Another real treat in Haines, is that the marina is very affordable, so putting the boat in was a no brainer. This would be our last chance of the season to fish and crab, so it was an opportunity we would not pass up. Fishing and Crabbing in a new location is always fun, but can often be a little less productive until you find where the critters are hanging out. Lucky for us, we found enough for a beautiful meal.
