Mini Basket Weave Stitch: a Knittycat's Knits Tutorial

Video tutorial of the Mini Basket Weave Stitch Stitch. This is a super simple stitch that is perfect for beginner knitters. It provides a fabric that lays flat and doesn’t curl on the sides. It has a beautiful woven look and is great stitch for home projects like dishcloths, placemats or larger projects like blankets. The one- and two-color stitch patterns are provided below.

One-color stitch pattern (stitch is worked on an odd number of stitches; pattern is a 4-row repeat; level: beginner):
Abbreviations: K=knit; P=purl; RS=right side; sl1wyif=slip 1 stitch purlwise with the yarn in the front; st=stitch; WS=wrong side.

Cast on an odd number of st using any cast-on method of your choice (I typically use the long-tail cast-on method; video link to that technique is below). You can use regular needles; you don’t need double-pointed needles; I like using them for my demos (:

Row 1 (WS): K1, P to the last st, then K1.
Row 2 (RS): K1, *sl1wyif, K1. Repeat from * to the end of the row.
Row 3: Same as Row 1
Row 4: K2, *sl1wyif, K1. Repeat from * to the last st, then K1.

Repeat Rows 1-4 for the one-color Mini Basket Weave Stitch Pattern. When done knitting, suggest ending on Row 4 and then cast off using regular bind off or any bind-off method of your choice. No blocking needed.

Two-color stitch pattern (not shown in video; actual pattern is same as the 4 Rows shown above but you will be alternating colors as shown below) Designate your two colors as Color A (or main color) and Color B (or contrasting color).
Cast on an odd number of st with Color A.
Switch to Color B and do Rows 1-2 in Color B.
Switch back to Color A and do Rows 3-4 in Color A.
Continue switching back and forth as noted above. End your work after Rows 1-2 (in Color B) and then cast off your st in Color A.
