This an extract from "The Tilehouse Street Story", a film made by the short-lived Hitchin Cine Society in 1950 based on a talk given by local historian Reginald Hine. I arranged to add a commentary by former TV newsreader, Richard Whitmore and the film was issued by Hitchin Historical Society on its DVD "A century of Old HItchin on Film".
We see Hitchin's first telephone exchange, Dick Turpin's ring and the site of the former Three Tuns public house at No 11. Mr Day the basket maker is seen weaving in the cellar of No 12. There were naughty goings-on further up the road during the War and the story of a give-away wooden leg.
