Most of the drawbridges in Florida operate using a counterweight system. When the bridge opens, the counterweight on the opposite side balances the weight of the moving part of the bridge. This reduces the need for a powerful motor and allows for smoother and more energy-efficient operation.
Usually, only one section of the bridge lifts (a so-called bascule bridge — either single- or double-leaf), which is typical for many coastal cities in Florida.
