【Yamabushi and Shugendo】

"Yamabushi" are Japanese mountain ascetics known for their training in nature and spiritual practices. They belong to Shugendō, a unique religious tradition that combines elements of Buddhism, Shinto, and Taoism. Shugendō emphasizes ascetic practices in the mountains, seeking spiritual power and harmony with nature.

The Hakusan faith is a major form of mountain worship in Japan, centered on Mount Hakusan, one of the country’s most sacred peaks. It venerates the mountain as a dwelling place of deities, blending Shinto beliefs with Buddhist practices. Pilgrimages to Hakusan and its shrines have long been important for both local communities and practitioners of Shugendō.
