Ciao a tutti! Today, we're going to look at the most common Italian words and expressions to talk about clothing. At the end of the video, you'll be able to make simple sentences to make easy conversations with your friends.
--------------------------- SUMMARY OF THE LESSON -------------------------
The Italian word for "clothes" is "vestiti" and it’s generally used in the plural form. Also, it goes along with the article “i” because it’s masculine: i vestiti
In the first part of this lesson, you’ll learn the Italian name of the most common clothes and then we’ll look at some expressions to use in conversations
PART 1 - NAMES OF THE CLOTHING (0:20)
UPPER BODY
la camicia = shirt
la camicetta = blouse
il maglione = jumper
la maglietta = t-shirt
LOWER BODY
i pantaloni (pl.) = trousers
i jeans = jeans
la gonna = skirt
i pantaloncini = shorts
OCCASIONS
il vestito = dress
l’abito = suit
la cravatta = tie
UNDERWEAR
le mutande / le mutandine (pl.) = panties
il reggiseno = bra
I calzini (pl.) = socks
WINTER CLOTHES
il cappotto = coat
il cappello = hat
i guanti (pl.) = gloves
la sciarpa = scarf
SUMMER CLOTHES
il costume / il bikini = swimsuit / bikini
il cappellino = cap
gli occhiali da sole = sun glasses
HOME CLOTHES
la camicia da notte = nightgown
il pigiama = pajamas
le ciabatte / le pantofole = slippers
SHOES
le scarpe = shoes
le scarpe da ginnastica = trainers
le scarpe col tacco = heeled shoes
i sandali = sandals
le infradito = flip flop
gli stivali = boots
ACCESSORIES ()
gli occhiali = glasses
l'orologio = watch
la cintura = belt
la collana = necklace
l'anello = ring
il portafoglio = wallet
PART 2 - EXPRESSIONS/EXAMPLES (3:36)

1. VESTIRSI = wear/get dressed (3:45)
Examples:
(Io) mi sto vestendo per uscire = I'm getting dressed to go out.
(Tu) come ti vesti alla festa? = what will you wear at the party?
La maestra si veste bene = the teacher is well dressed
Oggi vi siete vestiti eleganti = you dressed up today
Mia zia si veste spesso di rosso = my aunt often wears red
2. METTERSI (colloquial) = put on (06:52)
Examples:
(io) mi metto la sciarpa nuova = I put on my new scarf
Lui si mette sempre il cappellino = He always wears a cap
Watch out for this expression: Ma che ti sei messo/a?
it's definitely not a compliment and means you're not dressed appropriately
3. INDOSSARE (formal) = wear (08:18)
Examples:
Tu indossi una maglietta verde = you're wearing a green t-shirt
Luca indossa la cravatta = Luca wears a tie
4. TOGLIERSI = take off (9:12)
Examples:
(io) mi tolgo il cappotto perche' fa caldo = I take off my coat because it's hot
Filippo si toglie gli occhiali nella doccia = Filippo takes off his glasses in the shower
5. CAMBIARSI = get changed (10:24)
Example:
Io mi cambio le scarpe perche' sono scomode = I change my shoes because they are uncomfortable.
6. PROVARSI = try on (11:11)
Example:
Mi posso provare questi pantaloni? = can I try on these trousers?
7. STARE = fit/suit (12:12)
Examples:
questa giacca non mi sta = this jacket doesn’t fit
la maglietta le sta grande = the T-shirt looks big on her
Come mi sta? = how do I look?
